The easiest way to navigate Lisbon downtown and avoid steep hills

With some local knowledge you can avoid steep slopes and navigate between Bairro Alto/Chiado, Baixa and Alfama at ease.

The easiest way to get from downtown Lisbon to the Castelo de Sao Jorge is to take 2 lifts.

You need to take two (different) lifts to get to the Castelo de São Jorge. From the Baixa the elevator is called Elevador Castelo. The entrance is on the Rua dos Fanqueiros, an old historical building. You are in the right area if you see Justa Elevador in your far back as it literally is at the extension of the lift.

This Lift will take you up to Rua da Madalena and you will exit in the middle of Alfama quarter you can then cross the street diagonally towards Largo Chão do Loureiro, to the Chão do Loureiro building – an old market hall where Pingo Doce (supermarket) is located. In the supermarket, the elevator gives you also access to a rooftop restaurant and a bar with a vast terrace that is one of the best viewpoints in Lisbon.

Once up there, it is about a 10-minute walk to the castle. Just follow the signs :)

Where to find Elevador Castelo

Address: Rua dos Fanqueiros 170/178, Baixa

Opening hours: every day from 07 a.m – 9 p.m.

Price: Free

In case you are in the Mouraria Quarter, you can go up from Martin Moniz square using electric escalators located near the tram 28 Stop. It is a mere on minute walking from our LD Apartments homes that are moments from Baixa and Alfama.

In a similar way, the best way to connect between Bairro Alto/Chiado and Baixa is best to use the tube station Baixa-Chiado as you can walk through it using the automatic escalators to avoid the hills.

Alternative lifts can be found in Rossio train station or the HM shop.
