Marchas Populares 2018 - Av. Liberdade Lisbon

Each year on the evening of the 12th June, the different city neighborhoods take part in a parade along the most iconic avenue of Lisbon the Av da Liberdade.

And this year it will not be an exception, it will start from 21:30 however you should plan to get there sooner as traffic will diverted and most of the people will go there earlier to try to catch the best spot.

The Marchas Populares in the City of Lisbon have started in 1932 and is a display of the cultural pride of the Lisbon's neighborhoods.

This is a local competition and every year the rival neighborhoods regardless of the official will still debate for months after the event on who in their opinion add the most original parade, the best music, the best choreography the most original lyrics etc

There are 20 marches competing against each other with songs, lyrics, costumes, choreography and overall impression judged by a special jury.

How to get there : you can take the tube Marquês, Avenida, Restauradores or rossio and walk from there.

Don't forget that after this event the entire city and especially the old historic neighborhoods will host the biggest street party of the year that will last until early hours in the morning.

There will be a lot of dancing drinking and eating especially Sardines. Most Portuguese people will go around the Alfama, Mouraria and the Castle, stopping from time to time here and there and enjoying what ever is happening at the time and so i do recommend you to do the same.
