How to Spot and Avoid Tourist Traps in Lisbon and other safety tips

Lisbon is a very cool and vibrant city, tourism is booming and as result unfortunately there are always people trying to take advantage of the less informed.

This article aim is to help you having the best experience in Lisbon and staying way from any typical tourist traps.

Restaurants & Food
Rua Agusta Lisbon
Some restaurants in downtown area Baixa are doing scheme where they will make suggestion of a dish and then they will charge you 175€ or more for a meal. For those reasons you should stay way from the following restaurants:
  • Made in Correeiros
  • Obrigado Lisboa
  • Tiagu's

If in doubt don't order anything without seeing the price on the menu or asking for the price. Please, note some of the typical local restaurants do not even have a printed menu. Asking for the price is a good way of avoiding surprises.

Menus in various languages with pictures of food might be a hint that it’s only for tourists. Try to avoid these if you want to have authentic Portuguese food.
If a restaurant is pretty empty, especially between 12–2pm and 8–10pm,
you should probably avoid it.

Look around and see if you can spot locals - young and old. If you do not, choose another one.

Good restaurants do not need to grab or fetch guests from the street. The exception to the rule: restaurant not on the main street and not easy to find.

Pizza, kebab and paella are not traditional Portuguese food.

Is Lisbon a safe place ?
Yes, Lisbon is a very safe place most of the problematic central areas have been refurbished over the last years and new business and people moved in. So areas like Cais do Sodre, Mouraria, Chiado and Bairro Alto are now very trendy when some years ago they were problematic.

You might get a false sense of insecurity when walking around the old
Lisbon neighbourhoods due to graffiti on the walls, run down buildings or garbage on the street. But that is not the case and you should just use your common sense at all times.

The most serious crimes reported are purse-snatching and car break-ins so if you rent a car don't leave anything of value inside and don't open the booth if you don't take everything out when parking.

To avoid pickpocketing, don't place your wallet in your back pocket or backpack. Keep your valuables where you can see them and don't leave your phone or wallet lying around on the table at a restaurant.

There are some Gypsies offering you hashish or other drugs. They're usually seen down Rua Augusta, Praça do Comércio and Rossio, local authorities are very well aware of them but aren't arrested because what they're selling is not actually hashish but dry bay leaves. If someone offer you drugs on the street just say no and walkway.
